There are four Southwest Florida cities that rank among the top 50 safest in the state. BackgroundChecks.org, a research website, ranked the 50 safest cities in the state based on FBI violent crime stats and propriety research data. Rates are normalized per 100,000 residents with the state average being 540 for violent crime and 3,415 for property crimes. This is calculated by taking (# of crimes/population) * 100,000.

Located in Charlotte County on Florida’s west coast, Punta Gorda is the only incorporated municipality in the county.  The city is a small historic town of 16,600 residents that is known for its boating and fishing opportunities.  It is also a very safe place to live, with a violent crime rate of 65 your chance of being affected by property crime here just 1.6%.

#3 Marco Island

An affluent coastal community in Collier County in South Naples, Marco Island has a population of 16,400 residents.  This Southwest Florida city is the largest barrier island in the Ten Thousand Islands area of the region, and this is a safe place to call home.  The violent crime rate here is 70.7, and your chance of being involved in a property crime is just 1.2%.

Located in Lee County on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Cape Coral was founded and developed as a master-planned community.  This city encompasses 120 square miles and is home to 181,200 residents, making it the largest city between Tampa and Miami.  Cape Coral is a safe choice in Florida, with a violent crime rate of 143.5 and just a 2.2% chance of being affected by property crime here.

Located in Collier County in southwest Florida, Naples is a city of 20,600 residents.  Naples is one of the wealthiest cities in the U.S., with the second highest proportion of millionaires and the sixth highest per capita earning in the country.  Living here is a safe choice, with a violent crime rate of 158.3 and a 2.6% chance of being involved in a property crime.

Charlotte Sports Park

Recipient of the USA Today 2014 Readers’ Choice Award for Best Spring Training Facility, Charlotte Sports Park is a state-of-the-art facility with a baseball boardwalk ringing the outfield, family-friendly kids play area, upgraded concession stands and a top-notch team store. The Rays Inaugural Spring Training Season in Charlotte County in 2009 featured record breaking crowds, as the Rays set a franchise record for single-season home attendance. During the 2014 Spring season, the attendance record was broken for the largest single game crowd at Charlotte Sports Park. As the 2016 Spring Training season approaches, the Rays look forward to another great year in Charlotte County. The Rays minor league affiliate, the Charlotte Stone Crabs, also call Charlotte Sports Park home. The Stone Crabs won the 2015 Florida State League Championship, have hosted an All-Star Game, and have earned multiple trips to the playoffs since their 2009 inaugural season.
