Drive in Movie Theater in Punta Gorda

16.07.2014 in Events

In 1933, Richard M. Hollingshead nailed a sheet to two trees in the yard of his New Jersey home, stuck a radio behind the sheet, and mounted a Kodak projector on the hood of his car. Thus, the drive in movie theater was born! The idea was patented and took off from there! Drive-in theaters have since come a long way from a sheet nailed to a couple of trees. In 1958, drive-ins were at their peak, but with the invention of cable TV and VCR’s, the rage of drive-in theaters eventually died out.drive in theater

Here in Punta Gorda, we are bringing back the nostalgia of going to a drive-in movie, and we’re doing it for a good cause! Michael Saunders and Company has teamed up with the AMI Kids Crossroads to bring something special to this small, charming town. The third Friday of every month there will be a drive-in movie in downtown Punta Gorda in the empty lot on the corner of Marion and 41N.  The cost is $20/car, and concessions will be available for purchase.  You may purchase tickets now by clicking here, or buy them when you get there!

They work with  foster boys who have trouble fitting into the foster care system by giving them stability, positive role models, education, and most importantly- family.

On Friday, July 18, the drive-in theater will be showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It will start after Sunset, at approximately 7:30 p.m.

We hope to see you there!
