20.01.2017 in Area News, Events, Uncategorized

It’s almost time for the 12th year for one of Punta Gorda’s best and most popular events. John Wright, Chamber of Commerce President, put out the following information:

“The Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce is entering its 12th year of service to the community and in February 2017, the annual Wine and Jazz Festival too will be celebrating its 12th anniversary. This festival has received all types of accolades over the years and has brought such amazing acts as Ramsey Lewis, The Rippingtons featuring Russ Freeman, Peter White, Gerald Albright, Norman Brown, David Benoit and, of course, festival favorite Mindi Abair.

“We want 2017’s festival to be something special. A true celebration to honor those who have made the festival what it is today” said John Wright, President of the organizers, The Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce. The talent line-up for 2017 is now being set and, according to Wright, the bar has yet again risen to bring the very best of world-class jazz artistry to Punta Gorda.”

Drive in Movie Theater in Punta Gorda

16.07.2014 in Events

In 1933, Richard M. Hollingshead nailed a sheet to two trees in the yard of his New Jersey home, stuck a radio behind the sheet, and mounted a Kodak projector on the hood of his car. Thus, the drive in movie theater was born! The idea was patented and took off from there! Drive-in theaters have since come a long way from a sheet nailed to a couple of trees. In 1958, drive-ins were at their peak, but with the invention of cable TV and VCR’s, the rage of drive-in theaters eventually died in theater

Here in Punta Gorda, we are bringing back the nostalgia of going to a drive-in movie, and we’re doing it for a good cause! Michael Saunders and Company has teamed up with the AMI Kids Crossroads to bring something special to this small, charming town. The third Friday of every month there will be a drive-in movie in downtown Punta Gorda in the empty lot on the corner of Marion and 41N.  The cost is $20/car, and concessions will be available for purchase.  You may purchase tickets now by clicking here, or buy them when you get there!

rocky horror pictureProceeds will go to AMI Kids Crossroads, a nonprofit organization that has been transforming the lives of children for 30 years. They work with  foster boys who have trouble fitting into the foster care system by giving them stability, positive role models, education, and most importantly- family.

On Friday, July 18, the drive-in theater will be showing The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It will start after Sunset, at approximately 7:30 p.m.

We hope to see you there!
