Our Town Update

Journey to the Future– Team Punta Gorda and the City of Punta Gorda hosted a collaborative event on January 7th to discuss strategies for future planning of the city and encourage input to update the citywide master plan. It was well attended, with over 700 in attendance. Exciting changes are coming to Punta Gorda and the community has truly banded together to plan and support the future of our town.

Sunseeker-  Keynote speaker John Redmond, President of Allegiant Airlines,  shared some exciting plans for the Sunseeker Resort. Aside from some new great bars and restaurants and a mile long boardwalk, Sunseeker will bring more than 650 permanent, full-time jobs to our area. John estimates that the resort could bring as many 500,000 people to this area per year.

This will help to boost our local economy and support small businesses in Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor. John addressed citizens’ concerns that the Resort will bring traffic congestion between Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor. Sunseeker will have a shuttle service providing transport between the Punta Gorda Airport and Sunseeker, reducing the overall amount of traffic in and out of the Resort. A preview center is under construction where guests will soon be able to visit the site and learn more about the resort.

Citywide Master Plan- Punta Gorda City Manager, Howard Kunik, announced the start of the  Citywide Master Planning process. This plan will include a community vision illustrated with concepts for future land uses, parks and green spaces, housing, and ideas for better connectivity and mobility. The city has hired Dover, Kohl & Partners to help create plans focused on smart growth and sustainability.

Victor Dover spoke on the importance of planning our city, making our street people friendly, and shaping the growth of our downtown area to match the values of our community.  The city has also hired their firm to design a waterfront activity center.

Aviation Training- Charlotte County has received a Florda Job Growth Grant from the State. The grant will be used to provide aviation training at the Punta Gorda Airport, expected to begin in early 2020.The $1.7 million grant from the state’s Department of Economic Opportunity, announced at the end of December, will create training for Aviation Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics (known as A&P). The program is expected to drive high-paying, high-skilled jobs to the county and fuel economic growth which will help surrounding counties in Southwest Florida that rely heavily on industries focused on tourism and hospitality.

Former IMPAC University Building- The owners of Fisherman’s Village purchased this property and have already begun working inside the building to construct residential condos and accommodate the Military Heritage Museum. The museum is currently located in Fisheerman’s Village and will be moving in this month. They are scheduled to hold their grand opening in mid to late spring of this year.
